After making a splash at the box office with Wuthering Heights, Warner Bros. continues to introduce a new film project titled The Bride!, a Gothic film inspired by Frankenstein, the classic novel by Mary Shelley,
as well as the iconic film The Bride of Frankenstein. The film marks the collaboration of Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in the two leading roles.

A new voice for the iconic Bride character
The character of the Bride first appeared on screen in the 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein. However, at that time the character had almost no dialogue and very little opportunity to express her thoughts. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal explores this narrative gap to craft a new story, giving the Bride a voice, personality, and her own perspective.
Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale deliver a powerful on-screen partnership
The film has attracted attention thanks to its strong cast, led by Jessie Buckley as the Bride and Christian Bale as Frank. The chaotic relationship between the two characters has even been compared by some critics to the infamous criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised Buckley’s performance, stating that her acting turns the film into “a strange but delightful experience.”
Critics praise the film’s artistic ambition
Many critics have also highlighted the artistic ambition of director Maggie Gyllenhaal. Tomris Laffly from RogerEbert.com wrote that The Bride! is “a film to feel rather than to interpret.” According to her, the movie plays like a symphony of cinematic ideas, cleverly drawing from Mary Shelley’s Gothic legacy while delivering an intense romance and a strong feminist voice.
Luke Hicks of The A.V. Club shared a similar view, describing the film as “a bold, beautiful, and feminist explosion.”
Meanwhile, William Bibbiani from The Wrap suggested that the film could become “a new favorite for many audiences,” while Kristen Lopez of The Film Maven praised the bold screenplay and Jessie Buckley’s explosive performance.
A bold blend of cinematic influences

Some critics have emphasized the film’s wide creative scope. Amy Nicholson from the Los Angeles Times described The Bride! as “a crazy mix of 1930s musical, 1940s film noir, 19th-century literature, and 21st-century thought.”
Similarly, Caryn James of BBC noted that the film demonstrates strong ambition by blending various cinematic inspirations into a single distinctive vision.
Maggie Gyllenhaal returns after Oscar-nominated success
The project also marks the return of director Maggie Gyllenhaal following The Lost Daughter, a film that received three Academy Award nominations. With this new project, she continues to develop her distinctive cinematic style, where classic Gothic aesthetics merge with a modern sensibility.
A dark romance set in a chaotic world
The story begins when the lonely Frankenstein arrives in Chicago seeking help from Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for him. From the body of a young woman, the Bride is reborn, igniting a fierce relationship between two outsiders living beyond the law.
As they become entangled in chases and chaotic events, the pair forms a dramatic story that blends romance, horror, and Gothic tragedy.
