MPA Condemns Seedance 2.0
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has condemned ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 AI tool for large-scale copyright infringement after the AI video “Tom Cruise vs. Brad Pitt” gained attention. The video, depicting Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting on a rooftop, was created by Ruairi Robinson using only a short command.
Industry Concerns
Rhett Reese, screenwriter of the Deadpool series, stated that this technology could change the way films are produced, allowing someone to create content identical to Hollywood projects using only a computer. Some users are concerned that AI technology could use intellectual property without permission.
Copyright Issues and Legal Actions
The MPA asserts that Seedance 2.0 illegally uses protected US copyrights on a large scale and demands that ByteDance cease its infringing activities. Previously, OpenAI faced a similar situation with its Sora 2 tool, subsequently adding protection mechanisms and signing licensing agreements with Disney for 200 characters.
It is currently unclear whether ByteDance will apply a similar licensing mechanism. Several major studios have filed legal claims, including Paramount Skydance and Disney, accusing the company of intellectual property infringement when its Seedance AI recreated images and characters from many popular brands such as South Park, Star Trek, The Godfather, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar, Star Wars, and Marvel.
Seedance AI Tools
Seedance 1.0, launched in June 2025, was considered a powerful AI tool for creating videos from text and images. ByteDance then developed Seedance 2.0, which supports diverse inputs including text, images, video, and audio, and can create videos up to 60 seconds long with complete original audio.
Many AI-generated videos have garnered attention, recreating scenes from Spider-Man, Titanic, Stranger Things, The Lord of the Rings, and Shrek, raising concerns about copyright control in the AI era.
